On Thursday, Italian law enforcement officers conducted raids at the headquarters of a number of luxury labels, including Chanel and Bulgari, in response to suspicions that these businesses had utilized subcontractors who used Chinese workers. Milan prosecutors have conducted raids as part of a larger investigation that has discovered allegations of labor exploitation in the supply chains of many luxury labels, including Prada, Givenchy, and Dolce & Gabbana. The raids are considered to be part of the inquiry.

After the corporations reached an agreement to tighten their oversight of their supply chains, the measures were lifted. Industry Minister Adolfo Urso stated that the reputation of Italian brands was “under attack” in the previous year. This is not the first time that the Italian government has risen to the defense of luxury brands.

The issue at hand is the nearly ubiquitous practice of brands subcontracting labor to suppliers, who then contract to others, ultimately resulting in companies that employ Chinese people in conditions that are exploitative.
