Following a two-hour phone conversation with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump declared that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin talking towards a ceasefire and an end to the conflict.
Trump claimed the discussion went “very well” and added that the two sides must negotiate terms for a peace agreement. Trump, who also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed confidence, but a ceasefire or peace agreement does not seem imminent.
While Zelensky stated that “this is a defining moment” and asked the US to stay involved in negotiations, Putin declared that he was prepared to cooperate with Ukraine on a “memorandum on a possible future peace agreement.
Despite Trump’s positive remarks about his chat with Putin, there was no indication of when peace talks would begin. The Russian president also failed to respond to calls for an unconditional 30-day truce from the United States and Europe.
Zelensky stressed Ukraine’s need for a “full and unconditional ceasefire” during his one-on-one conversation with Trump, and he cautioned that “there must be stronger sanctions” if Moscow is not prepared. Before Trump met with Putin, Zelensky stated that he had requested that decisions about Ukraine be made with his nation’s input, referring to them as “matters of principles” for Ukraine.
