Javier Milei, the president of Argentina, has escalated tensions with the United Kingdom over the Falklands by threatening to impose economic sanctions on companies who extract oil near the British overseas territory.

Encouraged by indications that the US would reevaluate its neutral position on the matter, Milei stated in a national speech that the “winds of change” backed Argentina’s claim to the islands. According to Milei, there is a “clear and present danger” at the Sea Lion oilfield, where an Israeli and British company is scheduled to start exploration work.

The sovereignty of the islands in the southwest Atlantic Ocean is still a contentious issue between Argentina and Britain, more than 40 years after the conflict. The UK government is being contacted by BBC News to comment on Milei’s remarks. The statement that Falkland islanders “are British with a right to determine their own future” was reaffirmed this week.

Reiterating that the Falklands were “historically and legally” Argentinean, Milei unveiled his sanctions proposal in front of his cabinet at the presidential palace. Former Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly member Teslyn Barkman told the BBC that Milei’s statement “probably irked every single Falkland islander.
