Rhys received recognition at the esteemed US ceremony for his parts in the psychological thriller The Beast in Me and the eerie TV comedy Widow’s Bay. Rhys gave his second prize “to the great and good people of Wales, who were as much a nurture as anyone else” on stage.
Michael J. Fox received a special humanitarian award, Dolly Parton received an emotional homage, while Jean Smart, Allison Janney, and Stephen Colbert were among the other winners of the coveted US TV awards.Rhys is the first actor to win two lead acting awards in the same year; other nominees include Alan Alda, Sally Field, John Goodman, Elisabeth Moss, and Ted Danson.
Backstage, he stated: “I’m from a small country, and I’m glad we get opportunities to kind of put our flag on the map and say, ‘we fight higher than our weight sometimes’.The Beast in Me centers on Claire Danes, a bereaved writer who develops an obsession with an enigmatic new neighbour who is thought to be a murderer.
Rhys told Danes that receiving the prize was a “real shock” and stated, “Thank you for letting me join the mystery machine and bringing out the beast, you are an intimidating scene partner, but I’m grateful for all this.”
