This X account below looks to be owned by Ingrid Karlsson, a Swedish woman. However, researchers claim that the profile rarely posts original information, utilises a stolen photo, and is really reported by the social media platform as being headquartered in Benin, West Africa.

In partnership with Swedish broadcaster SVT, the non-profit organization Alliance4Europe and the Dutch analysis firm Trollrensics have identified over 8,500 accounts. According to the researchers, the profiles show indications of coordinated conduct, such as overlapping patterns in the Swedish political accounts they follow, similar identities, and reused photos.

These accounts are listed on X as being based in Ghana, Nigeria, and regions of Asia rather than Sweden. They surfaced in the lead-up to Sunday’s general election in Sweden. The opposition bloc, led by former prime minister Magdalena Andersson’s Social Democrats, was only ahead of the ruling right-wing alliance according to preliminary election results.

Opposition parties were predicted to win 176 of the 349 seats in the parliament after 95% of districts were counted, while the bloc headed by Ulf Kristersson, the current leader of the centre-right Moderate Party, was predicted to win 173. The Swedish Election Authority states that the results are still tentative and that the definitive outcome is anticipated one week following election day.
