AI executives have been cautioned by King Charles about the “existential dangers” that could arise if the technology ends up in the wrong hands. He said this during a symposium he had organised at Dumfries House in Ayrshire to talk about how technology might help society.
The Pope’s advisor, Kanishka Narayan, the UK’s AI Minister, and representatives from AI behemoths like Nvidia, OpenAI, and Anthropic were all present. It coincides with a number of recent warnings from industry insiders about the rapidly developing capabilities of sophisticated, or “frontier,” AI models and the regulations needed to keep them in line.The King informed the executives, “Those who have developed these technologies are now increasingly cautioning that AI risks developing darker capacities, perhaps even to take life.
He added there seemed to be a “urgency” in “adequately assessing the existential implications of such technologies getting into the wrong hands, and being utilised in potentially disastrous ways”. He addressed the group, saying, “The task before you is not just to advance technology but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community, and the natural world.” The purpose of the summit is to determine whether a “shared set of principles” can be created to “help guide the future application” of artificial intelligence.
