In a joint statement, the foreign ministers of the G7 countries demanded that Iran “end its arming of and support” for the Houthis in Yemen. Additionally, the G7 denounced Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia “in the strongest terms” and stated that the recent intensification of hostilities against Saudi-backed troops in Yemen posed a threat to regional and international energy security.
After the Iran-backed militia took control of an area along Yemen’s Red Sea coastline, including close to the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a vital maritime route for international trade, thousands of refugees have fled the country in recent days.
The announcement is made in advance of senior Iranian officials’ scheduled speech at the annual UN General Assembly in New York. The foreign ministers of the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom declared, “We call on the Houthis to immediately cease all military actions, all threats and attacks against civilian shipping, and to return to the political process in good faith.”
It continued: “Their reprehensible actions constitute a dangerous pattern of escalation that risks further exacerbating the conflict, undermining international trade and creating global economic instability.”The ministers declared, “Going forward, we will continue to support the legitimate Government of Yemen and reaffirm our strong commitment to Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
