Due to construction workers’ unintentional cutting of a wire required for air traffic control, hundreds of aircraft have been delayed at major US airports. On Monday afternoon, airports in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York announced ground stops and delays.

Although delays were still anticipated, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced hours later that the cable had been fixed and airports will resume regular operations. The major East Coast disruption occurred ahead of Tuesday’s UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City, which is expected to draw numerous international leaders arriving at airports in the New York region.

Andy Burnham, the prime minister of the United Kingdom, was able to board his flight prior to the delays and arrived on schedule. According to transport officials, the delays resulted from a damaged cable that affected the Terminal Radar Approach Control system, which directs aircraft during takeoff and landing.

The BBC’s US partner, CBS News, learned from NJ Transit, a public transport organization in New Jersey, that its construction workers had unintentionally cut the line and that markings had been placed incorrectly at the excavation site.
