A judge has ordered the Trump administration to re-open access to the White House immediately for three news organisations that the president banned from the premises last week. A court in the District of Columbia has issued a temporary restraining order against the ban, ordering that CNN, MS NOW and Politico be given their access back for 14 days, stating the move “likely violated their constitutional due process rights”.
The three publications filed a lawsuit after its reporters were barred from the White House and their passes were taken away. The Trump administration defended the decision in court, accusing the sites of releasing fake information and harming national security – an assertion the court rejected.
The White House has yet to react to the decision, and lawyers working for the president could launch further legal action. Judge Timothy Kelly said CNN, Politico and MS NOW were “likely to succeed” in proving that the White House had not used “adequate due process” in putting in place the ban.
