Large forest fires continue to burn out of control in southwest France and central Spain, causing major evacuations and requiring military action in both countries. In France, a major wildfire has reached the suburbs of Bordeaux, bringing the total number of people evacuated to 110,000. Previously, wildfires raged through the tourist peninsula of Cap Ferret on the Atlantic coast, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate.
The French Prime Minister has requested military assistance to help firemen on the ground.
The major conflagration, which began on Wednesday near Cap Ferret (60 kilometres from Bordeaux), has destroyed 125 square kilometers. Approximately 1,500 people left the peninsula by sea, arriving in Arcachon via water taxis and ferries.
In total, 44,000 people were evacuated in the Gironde department, where 53 residences and a campsite were burned, and 42 firemen were injured. Additionally, 23,000 people were evacuated in the Landes department due to an uncontained 25-square-kilometre fire farther south.Laurent Moretti, an Arès local, described it as both stunning and disturbing. “An evacuation on this scale has never occurred before.
