In the early hours of Sunday morning, Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, by special train. Prior to the visit, there had been no public announcement made about it. Additionally, approximately ten representatives of German corporations operating in the defence and energy sectors were present alongside Merz. Katherina Reiche, the Minister of the Economy, was also present.
Providing additional assistance to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia is the primary objective of this tour. Thousands more interceptor drones are scheduled to be sent to the Ukrainian armed forces in the next months, according to sources within the German government. To counter Russian jet-powered drones, which are notoriously difficult to intercept because of their high speeds, these devices have been strategically designed.
Additionally, Germany and Ukraine will increase production of long-range weaponry. A budgetary allocation of approximately one billion euros, which has already been approved, is going to be made available for this purpose. Germany has allocated an additional 350 million euros to repair and rebuild power plants in Ukraine that have been destroyed.
At the time of his arrival, Merz explained his journey by referring to the current state of affairs in the country. A statement made by the German chancellor stated that Ukraine requires “all of our support for the coming weeks.” He made reference to Russian strikes on cities, residences, and energy infrastructure, pointing to the fact that the fifth winter of the war is looming on the horizon.
