A unilateral assault on Qatar is not in the interests of the United States or Israel, according to U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on Tuesday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, not the Republican leader, took the decision for Israel to attack Qatar.

Israel escalated its military operations in the Middle East Tuesday as it sought to murder Hamas leadership officials in Qatar with an airstrike. In the Middle East and beyond, the strike was strongly denounced as a move that would worsen already tense conditions in the area. Trump said that he gave U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff instructions to alert Qatar to the impending attack but that it was too late to prevent it.

Trump said on Truth Social, “Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a Sovereign Nation and close ally of the United States, that is tirelessly and courageously taking risks with us to broker peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals.”

Hamas claimed that five of its members, including the son of Khalil al-Hayya, the exiled leader of Hamas in Gaza, were killed in the Israeli strike in Doha.
Washington sees Qatar as a powerful Gulf ally. A truce between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist organization in Gaza, the release of Israeli captives held by Hamas, and a plan for a post-conflict Gaza have all been mediated by Qatar.
