Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged Albertans to vote to stay in Canada ahead of an independence referendum on Monday, warning that the “stakes are high”. Speaking at a pro-unity demonstration in Calgary on Thursday, Carney stated that the referendum is taking place “at the worst possible time” and urged voters to deliver a “decisive result” against separation.
More than 450,000 Albertans have already voted early or by mail on a question determining whether they want the province to stay part of Canada or begin the process of holding a binding referendum to separate.
Campaigners on both sides are making their closing pitches, but polls show that the majority of Albertans prefer remaining in Canada. Carney cautioned Albertans against relying just on polls to determine the outcome.”The turnout will determine the outcome,” he told a throng of about 7,000 in Calgary.
The prime minister is expected to attend two back-to-back pro-unity rallies in Alberta, one on Thursday and another tomorrow in his hometown of Edmonton. Earlier in the day, Carney toured numerous Calgary companies and chatted with community volunteers in an effort to increase voter turnout.
