President Donald Trump has announced that the US will “substantially reduce” joint military drills with South Korea, citing his “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. On Truth Social, he mentioned that South Korea has just declined to join the US in “denuclearizing” Iran.These drills are not only expensive, with the United States of America covering the majority of the expenditures (as usual!), but they also convey a very wrong and antagonistic signal,” Trump said.
Seoul said it was reviewing Trump’s remarks and hoped that a positive relationship between Washington and Pyongyang would lead to genuine negotiations. Pyongyang has not yet commented. Earlier, South Korea stated that the drills with the United States would continue “as scheduled.
It comes after North Korea conducted ballistic missile tests this month that were banned by the United Nations. Trump stated in a social media post on Sunday that it was “too late to cancel” because the US and South Korea were scheduled to begin their annual military exercises on Monday.
He further stated: “While somewhat unrelated (?), I recently asked the President of South Korea if they would like to participate with us in the nuclear eradication of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and they said, ‘No thanks!
