Near the Colosseum in Rome a small group broke away from the main march to put up barriers, tear down road signs and set fire to waste bins. Protesters also threw bottles at police personnel, and eight demonstrators were arrested.
As a precaution, Piazza Montecitorio and Piazza Colonna, close to the office of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, were blocked and secured by riot police. Grassroots union USB has coordinated widespread rallies against growing cost of living and rearmament in Europe. Workers and students are taking part in the protest slogan “Shut everything down” along with retirees housing rights activists and port workers who are also on strike in some 20 nations against the transit of weapons.
Italian officials are on high alert for security, after the recent incident in Milan. The Interior Ministry has been put on alert for the infiltration of violent organisations in the numerous marches amid fears of disturbances that might persist throughout the weekend, termed as “problematic” by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi. There are alarms because there is this very insidious way of activating the squares, but nothing different from what we have dealt with so far”, Piantedosi said on Thursday.
