After winning the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership race, Shigeru Ishiba will become Japan’s prime minister starting next week. He was putting in a candidacy for party leadership for the fifth time. The last four times, he was unable to make it.

Ishiba, who is 67 years old, said prior to the battle that this would be his final fight. Nevertheless, he was able to prevail in spite of the fact that he is perceived as a recluse, does not identify with any faction, and has offended a number of party factions with his candid opinions.

He has been among the most vocal opponents of Fumio Kishida, the outgoing prime minister. In addition to serving as defence minister, he has also agriculture minister. But he has been out of government for many years now. It has indeed been a surprise victory.

But he was also firm on what he wants to do as Japan’s next prime minister. He also told the party members, “We ought to be a party that lets members discuss the truth in a free and open manner, a party that is fair and impartial on all matters and a party with humility.
