American Airlines new cabins with sliding doors are slated to begin flying on some of its flights in June, a significant aspect of its effort to compete against more profitable rivals for high-spending clients.
American initially presented the redesigned seats in September 2022, with plans to begin flights in 2024. However, like other carriers, American encountered supplier delays. The industry’s first—and business-class seats have gotten so fancy that they’ve delayed the delivery of new planes.
From its hub at Chicago O’Hare International Airport to London Heathrow Airport, American’s new Boeing 787-9 suites will begin regularly scheduled service on June 5. On August 6, Philadelphia will fly to London, and on September 3, Philadelphia will fly to Zurich. On October 26, a second trip between Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and Brisbane, Australia, will begin operating with the upgraded seats. According to American’s website, a round-trip ticket in “Flagship business class” from Philadelphia to London departing on August 11 and returning on August 18 costs $5,342.
Fifty-one of the “Flagship Suites,” the new international business class, will be available in the 787-9 cabin. 30 Flagship business-class seats, 21 premium economy seats, 34 extra-legroom seats, and 200 regular economy seats are now available on the airline’s 787-9 aircraft.
