LONDON: One tech CEO claims that Microsoft is giving OpenAI complete control over developing all of its best artificial intelligence tools and software, which could benefit archrival Google.

As Google attempts to maintain its lead in search, Todd McKinnon, CEO of identity security company Okta, told CNBC on Friday that the company is “probably doing the best job of actually not having to outsource their R&D. He mentioned that “all came from Google,” the so-called transformers that drive today’s generative AI technologies.

Deep learning models called transformers follow relationships in sequential data, like words, to learn meaning and context.

McKinnon stated that with DeepMind and the research, this came from Google. “I mean, the research from Google the transformers, which are the algorithms that all of these LLMs [large language models] are using to make these significant advancements, was the breakthrough.

According to McKinnon, there’s a chance Microsoft’s role in AI will be boiled down to that of a “consultancy.” When CNBC contacted Microsoft, a representative was not immediately available for comment.

It coincides with introducing technology developed by OpenAI, the lab behind ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot, into several of the company’s flagship products, including PCs outfitted with generative AI software and the chatbot CoPilot.
