Officials and analysts in China have seen the Trump administration’s decision to prohibit Harvard University from accepting foreign students through the same prism: the escalating rivalry between Washington and Beijing.
A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry stated Friday that the US action “will only tarnish its own image and reputation in the world” and that China has always opposed the politicisation of educational partnership.
Weibo, a platform similar to X, received hundreds of likes on a remark that said, “It’s fun to watch them destroy their own strength.” Other commenters on Chinese social media platforms adopted a similar approach.
Another commented on a hashtag related to the news that has tens of millions of views, saying, “Trump comes to the rescue again.” “The primary strategy to draw in top potential is to recruit overseas students! Will Harvard be the same Harvard if this route is closed?
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) decision is part of a larger effort to tighten control over foreign students in the US amid an immigration crackdown and is a blatant escalation of a disagreement between the White House and the oldest and wealthiest Ivy League university. As part of a massive immigration crackdown, US President Donald Trump’s administration has cancelled hundreds of student visas in almost every region.
