Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who has been the shortest-serving head of government in modern French history, abruptly resigned on Monday, plunging France into yet another period of political turmoil.
Lecornu resigned, but he hasn’t entirely vanished from the political landscape. According to the Élysée Palace, Emmanuel Macron has requested him to oversee “ultimate negotiations” before Wednesday night.
Asserting his acceptance of the task, the departing prime minister wrote on X: “I will tell the head of state Wednesday of evening if this is possible or not, so that he can draw all the necessary conclusions. The premiership has been become extremely challenging, as seen by Lecornu’s declaration to the president that he will not return to the position even if negotiations are successful.
Lecornu was the third prime minister since the previous summer’s early parliamentary elections and the fifth since 2022 under President Emmanuel Macron. Three blocs emerged from those elections in France: the far-right National Rally, a left-wing coalition, and the president’s centrist alliance.
