A woman who stabbed 15 people at Hamburg’s central train station last year has been ordered to be permanently placed in a psychiatric hospital, a German court ruled on Monday. The court found that the 39-year-old woman, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, could not be held criminally responsible for the attack, which took place on 23 May. A court spokesperson said medical evidence showed she was suffering from severe mental illness at the time.
According to the ruling, the woman stole a knife from a nearby drugstore before attacking passengers waiting on a platform during the busy Friday evening rush hour. At least four people were seriously injured in the incident.
The attack was brought to an end when two bystanders, with assistance from police officers, managed to restrain the woman. Evidence presented during the trial indicated that she was experiencing delusions and believed the passengers were planning to kill her, the spokesperson said. Prosecutors had requested that the woman be permanently committed to a psychiatric facility. The defendant accepted the court’s decision and does not intend to appeal.
