According to her husband, Helen Haines, the Australian MP who was struck by a car in what investigators said was a premeditated attack, has lost both of her legs. Phil Haines stated that although his wife suffered serious injuries as a result of the “horrendous incident,” “her heart and her mind are in good shape.”
The “good news in all this is that she’s alive,” he continued. Brendan Nugent, 43, the alleged attacker, first appeared in court on Wednesday and is facing numerous accusations. Shortly after reportedly driving his Toyota LandCruiser into the independent MP outside her electorate office in the remote town of Wangaratta, which is roughly 240 kilometres (150 miles) northeast of Melbourne, Nugent was taken into custody.
At a news conference in Melbourne, where Haines is receiving treatment, her husband stated that although her “road to recovery will be long and difficult, we know she is a fighter.”She is a strong individual who will do her hardest to get better with our love and support. And we hope for that. He expressed gratitude to hospital employees and those who have expressed concern for Haines, both domestically and abroad, and asked anyone who wish to show their support to make a donation to the Save the Children foundation.
