Yoon Suk Yeol, the former president of South Korea, was given a 30-year prison sentence by a South Korean court for launching drones into North Korea. Yoon ordered the operation in October 2024, according to the prosecution, in order to incite Pyongyang and provide an excuse for his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law later that year.

Yoon claimed to be defending the nation against “anti-state” groups who supported North Korea when he imposed martial law on December 3. However, it soon became apparent that he was motivated by domestic issues, and in response to widespread protests, he reversed the decision.

After receiving a life sentence for rebellion due to his failed attempt at martial law, Yoon was impeached and is in incarcerated. Yoon, his former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, former head of the Defense Counterintelligence Command Yeo In-hyung, and former head of Drone Operations Commands Kim Yong-dae were all found guilty of treason and abuse of authority by the Seoul District Court on Friday.

Yeo was given a 15-year term, Kim was given a 30-year sentence, and Kim Yong-dae was given a three-year sentence with a five-year suspension. In order to create a state of emergency, the defendants incited provocations from North Korea under the pretense of a military operation, the court stated.
