At age 73, Renowned tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain Dies

Legendary virtuoso on the tabla Zakir Hussain, 73, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, from heart-related complications.

In a statement, Nirmala Bachani, Hussain’s manager, said the maestro was dealing with issues linked to his blood pressure.

Zakir Hussain was previously reported to have been hospitalized in San Francisco due to heart-related issues. On March 9, 1951, Ustaad Zakir Hussain, the famous tabla player, was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

After completing his elementary schooling at St. Michael’s High School in Mahim, Mumbai, he went on to graduate from St. Xavier’s College, where he strengthened his intellectual and musical foundations. Hussain wed Kathak dancer and instructor Antonia Minnecola. Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi are their two daughters.

Zakir Hussain also appeared in films such as “Heat and Dust” and “Saaz.” In 2024, his most recent movie, “Monkey Man,” came out.

“The world falls silent as the tabla loses its maestro,” industrialist Harsh Goenka wrote on social media to express his condolences for Zakir Hussain’s demise. We have lost the rhythmic genius Ustad Zakir Hussain, who took India’s essence to the world stage. I am fortunate to have known him because of his affiliation with HMV and witnessed his incredible performance at our home. His beats will echo eternally.
