Following the discovery of explosives close to a pipeline carrying Russian gas to Hungary, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban called an emergency meeting of the National Defense Council. The discovery in a border region of neighboring Serbia coincides with Orban’s party’s severe poll deficit ahead of next Sunday’s pivotal elections.
Days after security specialists warned of a potential “false flag” operation that may be attributed to Ukraine, opposition leader Peter Magyar accused him of “panic-mongering” sponsored by “Russian advisers. Since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Orban, a friend of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has rejected calls from the EU to stop importing Russian energy.
The possibility of a staged operation, either on Hungarian or Serbian territory, to generate enough sympathy for Orban to help his Fidesz party win the election or to give Orban an excuse to declare an emergency and postpone or cancel the vote, has been brought up by Hungarian security experts in recent weeks. On Sunday morning, Orban’s close buddy, Serbian President Alexander Vucic, told the Hungarian leader about the find.
The Serbian army discovered two rucksacks loaded with explosives and detonators close to the village of Tresnjevac in the Kanjiza district, some 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the TurkStream pipeline’s crossing point into Hungary.
