The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of the emirate said on Monday that Dubai would soon have a ground-breaking form of public transport: the Rail Bus, a fully 3D-printed vehicle constructed from recyclable materials. The autonomous, solar-powered system, which is still in development, is anticipated to completely transform urban mobility in the emirate. At Madinat Jumeirah, a mockup of the Rail Bus is presently on exhibit at the World Government Summit 2025. The bus is accessible to all because of its eye-catching black and gold appearance, two rows of orange seats, and capacity for people with disabilities. Each carriage can hold 40 passengers and has 22 seats.

Innovative Public Transport Solution to Enhance Mobility and Sustainability

Dubai has introduced a groundbreaking autonomous Rail Bus system designed to revolutionize public transport by offering a cost-effective, eco-friendly, and seamless mobility experience. The system, which integrates with other public transport networks, aims to address first- and last-mile travel challenges while supporting the emirate’s ambitious sustainability goals.

Key Features of the Rail Bus System
The Rail Bus will operate on elevated tracks, strategically built across Dubai, and capable of reaching speeds of up to 100 km/h. Measuring 2.9 meters in height and 11.5 meters in length, the vehicle is fully powered by solar energy and features autonomous driving technology. Its lightweight, scalable 3D-printed structure ensures minimal environmental impact while maximizing operational efficiency.

Aligning with Dubai’s Smart City Vision
The project aligns with Dubai’s vision to become the world’s smartest city. It supports key national strategies, including the UAE Net Zero 2050 Strategy, Dubai’s Zero-Emissions Public Transport Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Self-Driving Transport Strategy 2030. The latter aims to transition 25% of daily trips to autonomous transport by 2030, reinforcing Dubai’s position as a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility.

Sheikh Mohammed Inspects the Rail Bus
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, recently inspected the Rail Bus during a visit to the RTA platform at the World Government Summit. He was accompanied by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, and Minister of Defence of the UAE.

Transforming Public Transport
Although the official launch date remains unconfirmed, the Rail Bus system is poised to transform public transport in Dubai, offering a sustainable, efficient, and futuristic mobility solution. This initiative underscores Dubai’s commitment to innovation and its leadership in shaping the future of urban transportation.
