Two Asian nationals were sentenced to one month in jail and a Dhs211,000 fine by the Misdemeanour and Violations Court in Dubai for stealing 48 cell phones. The suspects allegedly tricked the proprietor of an electronics trading company into believing that purchasers were interested in buying the phones.
The case began in August 2024 after a salesman reported that he had been duped and that the suspects had taken 48 of his cell phones.
The complainant clarified that the owner of the business he worked for had instructed him to deliver the phones to a facility in the Naif area so that they could be turned over and the Dhs211,000 total value could be collected.
When the complainant handed over the phones, the first suspect was waiting, and the second suspect was identified as the buyer. The second suspect then stated that the payment was in his adjacent workplace. He invited the complainant to come with him to put the phones in the office and give him the money.
The complainant further stated that he asked the first suspect why the second suspect was taking so long, and the first suspect replied that his companion had taken the phones and run off. After the first suspect tried to flee, the complainant apprehended him and called the business owner, who went to the scene and informed the police of the occurrence.
