Despite US President Donald Trump’s ‘Middle East Riviera’ vision, Egypt encouraged Arab nations Tuesday to embrace its $53 billion restoration plan for Gaza and refrain from resettling Palestinians, according to a copy of the plan. In the final communiqué to be issued following a summit in Cairo on Tuesday night, it was anticipated that the idea would be approved. A draft of the final statement has been seen by Reuters.
During the event, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi declared that he was “certain” that Trump could bring about peace on what he called the Palestinian issue. Who will govern the enclave and which nations will contribute the billions of dollars required for the rehabilitation of the damaged region are the two main questions surrounding Gaza’s future. According to Sisi, Egypt and the Palestinians have collaborated to establish an administrative council composed of impartial, skilled Palestinian technocrats who would be in charge of running Gaza.
In the interim, until the Palestinian Authority (PA) returns, this committee would be in charge of overseeing humanitarian aid and running the affairs of the strip, he stated. The fate of the Palestinian militant organization Hamas, the PA’s adversary, is another crucial matter. According to Israeli estimates, Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, starting the Gaza War, killing 1,200 people and seizing over 250 captives.
