According to billionaire Elon Musk, his tenure as head of President Donald Trump’s task committee on cost-cutting is “coming to an end. Musk praised Trump for the chance to assist in running Doge, the Department of Government Efficiency, in a post on his social media site X.

His designation as a “special government employee” permitted him to work 130 days a year for the federal government. Trump would reach that cap by the end of May, measured from his inauguration on January 20. Elon Musk resigned after his criticism of Trump’s “big, beautiful” budget bill—the legislative centrepiece of the president’s agenda.

“I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending as my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end,” Musk said on X. As the @DOGE purpose gets ingrained in the government, it will only get stronger over time.

According to the BBC, the White House will start “offboarding” Musk as a special federal employee on Wednesday evening. Musk’s departure follows his statement that he was “disappointed” with Trump’s budget, which calls for increased Pentagon expenditure and multi-trillion dollar tax benefits.
