Etihad-SAT, the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre’s (MBRSC) first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite, was successfully launched on Saturday. At 10:43 AM (UAE time), the satellite took off on a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. Subsequently, at 12:04 PM (UAE time), the crew at the ground station in Dubai verified that they had received the initial signal from the satellite.
Etihad-SAT, the first satellite with SAR imaging capability, marks a major turning point in MBRSC’s satellite development program. By offering high-resolution photographs in all weather circumstances, the upgraded capability will improve the Center’s Earth observation capabilities and further solidify the UAE’s dedication to creating cutting-edge space solutions.
Through a strategic alliance with South Korea’s Satrec Initiative, Etihad-SAT was created. To guarantee adherence to the highest international standards, the MBRSC team oversaw the technical requirements phase before proceeding to preliminary design and technical validation.
Later on, in collaboration with Satrec Initiative, MBRSC engineers assumed the lead in completing the design and manufacture. The move is consistent with MBRSC’s mission to strengthen national space capabilities by localizing cutting-edge technology and transferring expertise.
