Following the recent confrontation between the two nations, Iranian authorities have executed many people and made a wave of arrests of others accused of having ties to Israeli intelligence services. It follows what sources say was an unparalleled Israeli agent penetration of Iranian security forces.
Authorities believe that a number of high-profile assassinations throughout the conflict were influenced by intelligence provided to Israel. Iran claims that members of Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency operating within the nation are responsible for the deliberate murders of nuclear experts and senior commanders of the elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Authorities have been pursuing anyone suspected of collaborating with foreign intelligence, claiming it is for the sake of national security, after being horrified by the scope and accuracy of these murders. However, many people worry that this technology might also be used to stifle dissent and facilitate population control.
Three individuals were put to death by Iranian officials during the 12-day battle on suspicion of espionage for Israel. Three additional people were put to death on identical accusations on Wednesday, barely one day after the truce.
Since then, authorities have declared that hundreds of people nationwide have been arrested on espionage-related charges. A number of inmates have allegedly confessed to working with Israeli intelligence on state television.
