Iran is hosting a national burial for over 60 individuals killed during the 12-day confrontation with Israel, including nuclear experts and military leaders. Crowds gathered around Tehran’s Enghelab Square, flanking caskets draped in the Iranian flag with photos of the fallen commanders.

After the US directly intervened by striking strategic nuclear installations in Iran, the war came to an end earlier this week with a ceasefire. Huge black-clad groups of mourning carried photographs of the deceased, waved Iranian flags, and chanted slogans.

Authorities offered free bus and metro fares as part of a media push encouraging people to attend the event. For the day, government offices were closed. Mohammad Bagheri, Iran’s top military official and former chief of staff of the country’s armed forces, is among those being buried.

Bagheri’s wife and daughter, who perished in an Israeli attack, will also be buried. Iranian officials said that 627 people had died in Iran overall. According to Israeli sources, Iran’s missile assaults killed 28 persons in Israel.

Hossein Salami, the leader of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, and other nuclear experts, including Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi, the former dean of Tehran’s Azad University, are also attending the burial on Saturday. Donald Trump, the president of the United States, stated that he would “absolutely” contemplate striking Iran once more.
