Sir Keir Starmer is in a really critical situation right now.The prime minister’s actions and words today show that he and his team know how serious things are for him. Sir Keir’s remarks this morning about getting more money to make people proud of their areas would have felt strange and out of place.
Instead, the prime minister apologised to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein for “believing Mandelson’s lies” and giving him the UK’s highest diplomatic job. It could be more telling that Sir Keir said he understood the “anger and frustration of Labour MPs” when journalists were asking him a lot of questions.
Labour MPs will decide the prime minister’s destiny, and they are angrier than they have ever been during his time in office. Rachael Maskell, a Labour MP who has been a thorn in Sir Keir’s side over welfare cuts, says she feels his job as prime minister is “untenable” and that he will have to step down. He didn’t tell the House of Commons for months that he knew about the links between Peter Mandelson and Jeffrey Epstein when he was appointed.
