More than 14 months into the Israel-Hamas conflict, Gaza’s civil defense service reported on Sunday that Israeli attacks had killed at least 35 Palestinians throughout the enclave. A ceasefire agreement was “closer than ever” when the violence broke out, according to Palestinian organizations involved in the conflict.

The October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas sparked a wave of condemnation of Israel’s wartime measures, including accusations of “acts of genocide” by rights groups, which the Israeli government vehemently disputes.

Pope Francis condemned the “cruelty” of Israel’s shelling on Sunday, pointing out that children had been killed and that hospitals and schools in Gaza had been attacked. The pontiff was accused of “double standards” by Israel, yet this was his second such remark in a short period.

An AFP photographer observed locals looking for survivors among the wreckage, as others searched for items they could save.

Bodies wrapped in blankets were spread out on the sandy ground in a nearby compound. According to the military, it targeted a fighter for Islamic Jihad who was active in Deir el-Balah.

It told AFP in a statement that it did not provide its toll that “based on preliminary analysis, the reported number of casualties resulting from the strike does not align with the information held by the IDF (military).
