Reports state that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has crossed the border into China and will be in Beijing for a military display. Kim’s first multilateral international encounter will take place on Wednesday at the “Victory Day” parade, when he will mingle with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and other foreign leaders.
Using his armoured train, which reportedly has a restaurant with good French wines and fresh lobster, Kim entered China on Tuesday. South Korea’s Yonhap media reported that the train crossing into China runs slowly due to its extensive security measures, and the trip may take up to 24 hours.
The first time a North Korean leader has participated in a Chinese military parade since 1959 is Kim. Along with him, there will be 26 other heads of state, including those from Cuba, Iran, and Myanmar. While Pyongyang sent Choe Ryong-hae, one of its senior leaders, to China’s previous Victory Day celebration in 2015, his participation represents an improvement.
The lonely leader seldom ever leaves the country, and the only foreign leader he has recently interacted with is Putin, whom he has met twice since Russia invaded Ukraine. For an occasion commemorating the 70th anniversary of the two nations’ diplomatic relations, he last travelled to Beijing in 2019. He also traveled by rail on his trip.
