Career Trajectory of Anwar Husen
We started the interview by asking, “Could you share the highlights of your professional journey and what led you to your current role?”
Anwar shared, “My career has been a 37-year journey across the global oil and gas value chain. It began in 1988 as a Field Engineer with Schlumberger, which provided the hands-on foundation I still rely on today. Since then, I’ve held strategic roles at major organizations like Petronas, BG Group, Cairn India, and Karachaganak Petroleum Operating Company.
Academically, I supplemented my initial degree from University Technology Malaysia with a Master’s in Integrated Reservoir Management from IFP (France). One of my proudest technical milestones was co-inventing US Patent No. US 20060015310 A1, which focuses on well-fracturing simulation modelling. Today, I serve as Vice President of Subsurface and Petroleum Engineering at NESR in the UAE, while continuing to offer independent consultancy services globally.”
A Multidimensional Expert
Anwar Husen is a renowned leader recognized for his interdisciplinary expertise. To learn more, we asked him to share about his multiple roles in the industry.
He explained, “With a passion to take the industry forward and a belief that knowledge is only valuable if shared, I have authored numerous technical papers, alongside delivering training in production, reservoir, and stimulation engineering. For me, being a speaker or panellist at major conferences isn’t just about presenting; it’s about engaging with both seasoned leaders and aspiring beginners. Leading multidisciplinary teams—bridging everything from geoscience to well engineering—requires a holistic view of the field development planning process.
Driving NESR Forward
Interested in understanding the role of Anwar Husen in driving transformation at NESR, we asked, “Can you please share more about your role at NESR?”
“At NESR, my focus is on leading the Subsurface Petroleum Engineering and Geoscience fraternity. This involves technical analysis, assurance, and, crucially, talent development. A major part of my current work involves partnering with national oil companies to commercialize tight reservoirs. By applying advanced technical assurance, we are helping these organizations unlock production potential that was previously considered too complex or uneconomical.” he replied.
Contributions to the SPE
We then asked, “Can we get a glimpse of your roles within the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE)?”
Anwar mentioned, “The SPE has been a vital part of my professional life. I’ve served as a Distinguished Lecturer and participated in various steering committees for forums and workshops. I’ve also held executive roles within the Egypt, Sudan, and Delhi sections. My goal has always been to contribute to the collective intelligence of the industry and support the next generation of engineers.”
