On Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Washington, D.C., Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg commemorated NATO’s 75th anniversary alongside US President Joe Biden and all other Allied Heads of State and Government.

In 1949, the North Atlantic Treaty was signed at the Mellon Auditorium, where the Secretary-General emphasized that NATO is “not only the most successful and strongest but also the longest-lasting Alliance in history” during a speech. He stated that NATO’s long-term success has never been guaranteed. Instead, it is “the result of deliberate choices and difficult decisions” from the organization’s founding to arms control talks, and from its expansion at the end of the Cold War to its current support for Ukraine.

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, met with the Secretary-General earlier in the day. The decisions to be made at the summit to “strengthen our Alliance for the future” were discussed, including defense and deterrence, backing for Ukraine, and bolstering NATO’s Indo-Pacific partnership. The US Chamber of Commerce hosted the inaugural NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum, in which the Secretary-General also participated.

He spoke to industry representatives, Allied defense ministers, and others about NATO’s new defense industry pledge aimed at building greater transatlantic defense industrial cooperation. He welcomed that “just today, the (NATO procurement agency) NSPA signed a new multinational contract for Stinger missiles worth almost 700 million dollars.
