Russia agreed with US offers for a ceasefire in Ukraine, according to President Vladimir Putin, who also stated that many important aspects needed to be worked out and that any truce would have to address the conflict’s underlying causes.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed and injured by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, which has also caused millions of people to be displaced, destroyed communities, and led to the most intense conflict between Moscow and the West in decades.

Given that Ukraine had already accepted the US ceasefire proposal during negotiations earlier this week, Putin’s support—albeit with caveats—offers the strongest chance to date to put an end to the largest European conflict since World War Two.

Putin praised US President Donald Trump, who has stated that he wants to be known as a peacemaker, for his efforts to put an end to the conflict, which Washington and Moscow now portray as a deadly proxy war that had the potential to turn into World War Three.

In addition, he expressed gratitude to the leaders of Brazil, South Africa, India, and China for their “noble mission to end the fighting,” implying that those nations might be involved in a ceasefire agreement.

Russia has stated that it will not allow any NATO member to send peacekeepers to oversee a potential truce. According to Putin’s foreign affairs adviser, the president will meet with Steve Witkoff, Trump’s special envoy, later Thursday.
