Six of the seven countries in the G7 opposed the US’s decision to lift oil sanctions against Russia, according to German Chancellor Frederich Merz on Friday. The action was taken by US President Donald Trump to increase the world’s supply in the face of skyrocketing prices that followed the US-Israeli war against Iran on February 28.

The rulers of Norway, Canada, and Germany—all members of NATO—said they will try to persuade Trump to reconsider his mind through their channels of communication with the White House. The three reaffirmed the alliance’s position that the Kremlin still needs to be subjected to the greatest amount of pressure due to its war in Ukraine and its broader danger to international security.

According to Merz, “six out of seven clearly believed that we ought not to lift the sanctions upon Russia. The White House’s action was applauded by the Kremlin, which said that Russian and American interests are similar. “We interpret US actions as an effort to stabilize the energy markets.” Our objectives coincide in this regard,” stated Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president. We heard US representatives say that this exception has been made for oil that was loaded prior to March 12th.” Peskov spoke.
