In a previously unreported mission, Ukraine stated on Thursday that its long-range drones had targeted a significant offshore oil rig in the Caspian Sea this week. This indicates a new broadening of its target list in an ongoing effort to cut off the Russian petroleum profits fueling its war.
According to a source with the Ukrainian Security Service who spoke to CNN, “this is Ukraine’s first strike on Russian infrastructure related to oil production in the Caspian Sea,” calling it “another reminder to Russia that all its enterprises working for the war are legitimate targets.” Lukoil’s Filanovsky oil platform asserts that it is the biggest oil field in the Russian Caspian. Lukoil and the Russian Ministry of Defense have been contacted by CNN for comment.
Beginning in earnest in early 2024, Ukraine launched a deep strike campaign against Russian energy facilities. However, since early August, Kyiv has intensified this campaign, stepping up what Ukrainian sanctions commissioner Vladyslav Vlasiuk calls “long-range sanctions” targeting Russia’s largest source of funding. In addition to refineries, Ukraine is now targeting pipelines, ships, offshore drilling infrastructure, and oil and gas export infrastructure.
