Russian attacks killed at least 20 people in Ukraine on Tuesday, ahead of rival unilateral ceasefires suggested by Moscow and Kyiv. According to Volodymyr Zelensky, five civilians were murdered when multiple Russian glide bombs were dropped on the city center of Kramatorsk, while authorities in Zaporizhzhia reported 12 deaths as a result of a Russian aircraft bombardment.

In Russia, authorities in the Chuvash Republic reported two deaths and 32 injuries in a drone strike on Tuesday morning. Russia and Ukraine declared unilateral ceasefires on Monday, ahead of Russia’s commemorations of the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany on Saturday.

Russia announced a cease-fire on May 8 and 9, threatening a “massive missile strike” on central Kyiv if Ukraine breached the agreement. However, Kyiv said it would respect an open-ended truce beginning at midnight on May 6 and act “symmetrically” thereafter.

The two ceasefires appear to be unilateral, meaning neither side has agreed to the conditions, duration, or monitoring. Kyrylo Budanov, Zelensky’s chief of staff, stated that if the Ukrainian president’s cease-fire were reciprocated, “we will continue to observe it… The next move is Russia’s.”
