Vladimir Putin has frequently said that no 18-year-olds called up to serve Russia will be sent to fight in Ukraine, but a BBC Russian investigation discovered that at least 245 troops of that age had been murdered there in the last two years.According to new government laws, recent high school graduates can forgo military duty and instead join the regular army as contract soldiers.

They may account for only a small portion of Russian losses, but monetary bonuses and nationalistic indoctrination have made joining an appealing proposition. Alexander Petlinsky enlisted two weeks after turning 18.

Petlinsky’s aunt, Ekaterina, stated that he aspired to be a doctor and was accepted into a medical college in Chelyabinsk, an industrial regional center in the Urals. But Sasha had another dream,” she stated during a school memorial gathering. “When the special military operation began, Sasha was fifteen years old. And he wished to go to the front.”

Russia has avoided a nationwide mobilization by providing large amounts to males of fighting age – an especially appealing offer for those living in impoverished areas with few work opportunities. At first, men had to complete at least three months of conscript duty before signing a contract.
