Xi’s Tour of Europe Revealed the Enduring Divisions Within the EU

At the invitation of Prime Minister Viktor Orban and President Tamas Sulyok, I will make a state visit to Hungary in May, when the scent of grass and flowers permeates the Great Hungarian Plain. In an official statement, Chinese President Xi Jinping waxed poetic about his historic visit to Budapest on May 9, which was a part of a tour that also included stops in France and Serbia.

In honour of the 1950 Schuman Declaration, which launched the European integration movement, Orban hailed Xi’s China as “one of the pillars of the new world order” as the rest of the EU observed “Europe Day.”

A two-billion-euro ($2.1 billion) railway project was announced during Xi’s visit to Hungary, joining the growing list of significant industrial projects financed by China. Leading Chinese automaker BYD said in December that it would construct a factory to produce electrical vehicles (EVs), and another Chinese company, CATL, announced plans to build a battery plant with a project valued at 7.3 billion euros ($7.86 billion).

China has made approximately 16 billion euros ($17 billion) in various project investments, making it the largest foreign investor in Hungary.
