A French-owned ship has traveled through the Strait of Hormuz, more than a month after the US-Israeli war with Iran completely shut down the critical transportation route. The Malta-flagged container ship owned by French business CMA CGM passed the strait on Friday, according to the maritime company’s media unit BFM TV. CMA CGM has declined to respond.
It is the first ship operated by a major Western European company to pass through the strait since the conflict began, Kpler, a shipping analytics firm, confirmed. While Iran has stated that “non-hostile vessels” may use the channel, the current confrontation, in which numerous ships have been assaulted, has interrupted routine transportation activities.
Tracking data revealed that the French-owned ship sailed close to Oman’s coast, on the opposite side of the waterway from Iran. It’s unknown what the ship was transporting. MOL, a Japanese shipping company, verified that a ship carrying natural gas successfully navigated the Strait of Hormuz. The safety of the vessel and all crew members has been confirmed,” MOL stated. “We will continue to place the highest priority on ensuring the safety of our crew, cargo, and vessels as operations proceed.
