The military strikes between Israel and Iran that occurred overnight have alarmed European officials, who are demanding a rapid de-escalation to prevent a full-scale conflict that may spread throughout the Middle East and beyond.

One of the first leaders to respond was British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who called for “all parties to step back and reduce tensions urgently”.

No one in the area benefits from escalation. “We are working with partners to de-escalate, and stability in the Middle East must be the top priority,” Starmer posted on social media. “Now is the time for restraint, calm and a return to diplomacy.” Dick Schoof, his Dutch countepart, sent a similar message.

Middle Eastern assaults are alarming,” Schoof remarked. “The Netherlands urges all sides to maintain composure and to abstain from any more assaults or reprisals. De-escalation must happen right away for the sake of regional stability.

Following a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who briefed him on the goals of the military action, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called a meeting of his security council.

The Iranian nuclear development “infringe the terms of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and represents a serious threat to the whole region, especially to the State of Israel,” Merz said in a statement warning of instability in the region.
