In the event that Congress does not take action to provide funding for the Department of Homeland Security by the end of Friday, the agency has been caught in the middle of a partial shutdown of the government. Even while many of the Department of Homeland Security employees won’t get paid until the lapse is over, the vast majority of them will continue to work, and the general public is not likely to notice much of a difference.
For the duration of the fiscal year 2026, which will end on September 30th, the Department of Homeland Security is the only federal agency that is short on funding. Legislators have passed a number of funding bills for the remainder of the government since the closing of the longest shutdown in history, which occurred in the middle of November.
During the most recent package, which was approved at the end of January, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was only funded for a period of two weeks. This was done in order to provide Congress with additional time to negotiate reforms in the agency’s immigration enforcement operations. This was a demand made by Senate Democrats following the fatal shooting of two United States citizens in Minneapolis in January.
