The US president is set to address the annual World Economic Forum gathering on Wednesday, as his recent comments on Greenland continue to strain relations with European allies. California Governor Gavin Newsom on Tuesday urged European leaders to take a firmer stance against US President Donald Trump over his push to take control of Greenland. Speaking to reporters in Davos, the senior Democratic figure criticised what he described as excessive diplomacy and called on Europe to respond more decisively.
Newsom described Trump as someone who takes advantage of perceived weakness and said the European Union should respond with strength and unity. He argued that attempts to appease the US president would only encourage further pressure and stressed the need for a strong, collective response.
According to Newsom, Trump’s focus on Greenland was unreasonable and highlighted the importance of Europe standing together and defending its principles with confidence.
Trump has claimed that Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is strategically important for US national security. His remarks have tested the transatlantic alliance, prompting concern among European leaders.
