34 chemical engineering students and four faculty members from Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi were welcomed to the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) Research and Development (R&D) Center at Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. Lourdes Vega, the director of Khalifa University’s Research and Innovation Centre on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH) and a professor in the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department, led the trip.

Representatives of the R&D Center briefed the delegation on the technologies utilized in the project, which DEWA carried out. This initiative is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, and it uses renewable energy from the Mohammed River to electrolyze water to produce roughly 20 kilograms of green hydrogen every hour.

One of the nicest experiences our students have had this semester and most likely one of the highlights of their educational journey was the tour of the DEWA Green Hydrogen plant, where they learned about the R&D activities the firm is performing in this field. The pupils were thrilled to witness the practical applications of what they had learned in the classroom and the resulting consequences.

This is the third time DEWA has welcomed Khalifa University undergraduates studying chemical engineering as part of a hydrogen course, and it is one of the most eagerly awaited events of the course.
