Law enforcement officials have identified Cole Tomas Allen, the man arrested after bullets were fired inside the hotel where the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was hosted on Saturday night, as the BBC’s US news partner CBS reports.

The 31-year-old suspect is from Torrance in the Los Angeles area of California. After being detained by security agents inside the Washington Hilton hotel, he told law enforcement that he planned to shoot Trump administration officials, according to two sources.

According to CBS, between five and eight bullets were fired during the incident. Trump uploaded CCTV footage of a person racing past security agents, who then turn and chase him.At a late-night press briefing, police stated that security officers and the suspect exchanged fire, but did not specify how many rounds were fired.

Washington interim police chief Jeffery Carroll stated that the suspect was not hit by gunshots but was transported to the hospital for evaluation. The suspect was a guest at the Washington Hilton hotel where the correspondents’ dinner was held, Carroll said, adding that he was “armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives”.
