The head of the UK’s busiest airport has said that not building a third runway at Heathrow Airport would be a “huge missed opportunity” for the country. Thomas Woldbye said it would be “good to know what the government’s position is on the project” after Prime Minister Andy Burnham declined to declare if he supports expansion, according to BBC Radio 4’s Today program.
The airport’s chief executive indicated that if its owners could not invest in a third runway the money “will be invested somewhere else in the world.” He suggested a decision would be taken in the new year.
The Department for Transport said it was assessing replies to a survey and “considering what the appropriate next steps are”.It backed airport expansion “across the country where this can contribute to growth and opportunity while meeting the tests on the environment”, a government official said.
They stated expansion at Heathrow had the “potential to deliver economic benefits of around £40 billion across the country”. A third runway at Heathrow has been discussed for decades. The scheme has proved controversial, drawing fierce criticism from local people, politicians and climate protesters.
